Learning on Shavuot night

On the first night of Shavuot (this year, Tuesday night, June 7), Jews throughout the world observe the centuries-old custom of conducting an all-night vigil dedicated to Torah learning and preparation for receiving the Torah anew the next morning.

One explanation for this tradition is that the Jewish people did not rise early on the day G‑d gave the Torah, and it was necessary for G‑d Himself to awaken them. To compensate for their behavior, Jews have accepted upon themselves the custom of remaining awake all night.

Join us for text based study as well as Open mic: Bring your Torah questions and open a conversation.

Lag B’Omer Celebration, BBQ Smoke & Zohar

Join together for the annual Lag Ba’omer celebration as we sit around the warmth of fire and discover the mystical and magical teachings of the Zohar led by Rabbi Ari Kirschenbaum.

Lag BaOmer — this year, May 22nd — is a festive day on the Jewish calendar, celebrating the anniversary of the passing of the great sage and mystic Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, author of the Zohar. It also commemorates another event. In the weeks between Passover and Shavuot, a plague raged amongst the disciples of the great sage Rabbi Akiva. On Lag Ba’Omer the dying ceased.

No reservations necessary, please feel welcome to bring friends. $10 cover please. Sponsors Welcome 347.787.0864info@brooklynyid.com

Reliving the Exodus: Exploring the Modern Day Relevance of an Ancient Event.
==========
Next Wednesday, April 6 Rabbi Ari Kirschenbaum will be teaching the first  of a two part series on Passover.
———-
As part of our ongoing adult education program we invite you to join us for a special Passover class series.
Every year the Passover Seder beckons us to once again “travel” the road out of Egypt. On this night we are called on, not only to remember, but to relive the Exodus in body and soul.
As we re-create the story in ritual and song, we are transported back to the age of the Pharaohs, retracing our ancestors’ steps, in the land of the Nile over 3300 years ago. But what is the point of our Passover play-acting? How can a tale from the dawn of our ancient history shed light on our complex lives – in this modern day and age? Join us as we explore in depth as well as from a kabalistic perspective, the answers to these questions.
The class will take place at Congregation Kol Israel of Prospect Heights 8:00pm. This is a co-ed class and open to all levels. Refreshments served. No charge.
Best wishes to you and yours a happy, healthy and Kosher Passover.

COMMENTS

“November’s poems are uncommonly good…The 31-year-old poet captures not only emotion but also those religious yearnings, questions, and attempts to reach out to G-d that are largely unspoken.” –Sandee Brawarsky, Jewish Week Book Critic

“To read G-d’s Optimism is to remember what poetry is meant to be: musical, tender, philosophical, generous-hearted. When I read November’s poetry I am ashamed ever to have called myself a poet, for I know I am in the presence of a young master—as honest and witty as Kafka, as visionary as Doestoevski, but with a voice and presence all his own. This book is an astonishing debut.” –Liz Rosenberg, from the Foreword to G-d’s Optimism

In “the spectacular Hasidic verse of the young and rising poet Yehoshua November…there is no hint of the falsely pious certainties such as fuel the apocalyptic passions of those who hate, but instead the more existentially harrowing vision of those who love—and who, bereft of all certitude, are sustained by the luminescent thread of the Rebbe’s mystical teachings.” –Brett Sanders, Editor of New Works Review

“The invisible world and the mundane one are always rubbing shoulders in Yehoshua November’s crafted, imagistic poems. I admire and am moved by the spirit of stillness, and honesty of inquiry of these small landscapes and stories. They are tender as candlelight and full of the sorrowful mirth of their tradition, which treasures the unknowable.” –Tony Hoagland

G-d’s Optimism is a highly distinctive and original book, a book of serious spiritual devotion. The struggles and emotions of the book are compelling in ways that even a non-Jew would be moved by. In other words—this is a work of art. I read G-d’s Optimism with great pleasure.” –Lynn Emanuel

“…November’s poetry reminds us that Orthodox or Reform, Jew or non-Jew, we are not so different after all.”–Lee Chottiner, The Jewish Chronicle

“…November’s poetry is accessible, with a gentleness, and sometimes a melancholy that speaks to and captivates the reader… [G-d’s Optimism] is a rich collection filled with the rhythms of everyday life that encompass the striving for a higher level each individual longs to attain.” –Gila Wertheimer, Chicago Jewish Star
